The terms come from how the animals attack: the bull thrusts its horns upward, the bear swipes its paw downward. • Bull market: prices trend up over long periods, positive sentiment, high valuations. • Bear market: prices fall at least 20% from the high, fear dominates. Both phases are normal — historically bull phases clearly outweigh bear phases in length and magnitude.
