Blue chip

Beginner

The term comes from poker: blue chips have the highest value. In market lingo, blue chips are the biggest and most stable companies of a market — well-known, profitable, often with a long dividend history. They tend to swing less than smaller firms and form the foundation of many portfolios. But 'blue chip' is no guarantee — even giants can end up in crisis.
